I'd like to put forth two goals for the coming off-season meetings:
1. Further learning (I'd like to program a tank drive before the end of the year with nudges in the right direction from will, I'm sure everyone else has some personal goals too)
2. HAVE FUN WITH THE ROBOT! People need to get the chance to drive and have (safe) fun with the robot they put all sorts of time into building. When all the montreal stuff is set and sorted we should look into getting some more of our own carpet (The carpet we have now is pitifully inadequate) or perhaps doing some drive practice in somewhere like the library, which is full of carpet.

We also need to look into completing basic skill sets, assigning next year's jobs, organizing FLL, chasing sponsors, sending out plaques, etc...
Also is there anything we can organize for before school ends to do some fundraising?

Also do we want to have a junk food fundraiser before the end of the year? Might as well, as most other clubs won't be doing fundraising now as compared to when we do Macmillans. We can also use it for recruitment purposes for gr9-11, as most of them won't show up for the club day thing in sept.

As Georgia and I were discussing on the way back from Montreal, this is a good time of year for students currently in grade 12 to think about which students they have seen developing skill sets and showing team responsibility and commitment this year, in order to provide input as to which students are more likely to be identified to fill the gaps left by the graduates.

In the case of current grade 11s, they should be considering which newer team members have shown the interest and seriousness to commit to being more intensely mentored next year, in anticipation of the current grade 11s' own graduation.

And as a corollary, it would also be a good time for the students who were new to the team this year and who have found an area of interest, to seek out the older students to declare their wishes for more training and mentoring!

Guys, check this out: http://vocalid.org/about/

"In the United States alone, there are 2.5 Million Americans with severe speech impairments many of whom rely on computerized voices to express themselves. Yet many of them use the same voices as there are only a few options. That’s tens of millions of people world wide using generic voices.VocaliD (for vocal identity) aims to help children and adults with severe speech impairment find a voice of their own!

Our VocaliD approach extracts acoustic properties from a target talker’s disordered speech (whatever sounds they can still produce) and applies these features to a synthetic voice that was created from a surrogate voice donor who is similar in age, size, gender, etc. The result is a synthetic voice that contains as much of the vocal identity of the target talker as possible yet the speech clarity of the surrogate talker. It’s a simple idea that could make a powerful impact on the lives of those who rely on synthetic voices to express themselves."

I contacted them about donating my own voice and asked them whether vocals or finances would make a bigger difference. I thought it was a cool thing the team could get involved in either way. We might not have the finances to this year, but we definitely have the voices for it Smile Currently, it requires 2-3 hours of recorded speech. I asked them for details on how exactly to contribute and will pass it on if there is interest ^.^
It's the equivalent of donating hair to cancer patients, except most of us don't have 30cm of hair to spare and it isn't invasive. There isn't anything for us to give up Razz It's such a relatively unknown cause that can be supported, that participating in and raising awareness for it would probably make a really big difference.
Let me know what you guys think Smile

Guys just got the best idea from The Daleks!! - Host a LEGO collection at school for the FLL kids! They are short on parts and so many people have leftover LEGO lying around. Lego is also expensive to invest in on our part. Also what a great, easy way to increase out presence within the school.

That's a really good idea- a LEGO drive would definitely get people's attention.
