Parts that are needed now
I think we should start a list of parts that are needed now.
The laucher proto type needs what.
What is in the shop that can be used?
What do you have yourself?
What needs to be ordered?
The mass of a frisbee is probably less then the ball we shot last year,
Can we use a similar motor set up as last year?
I know on some of the videos on line they are using CIM motors

Although the frisbee is lighter, we will be adding more spin/rotational kinetic energy to the frisbee to stabilize it.
According to MIT, the average frisbee throw from a human is 14m/s, which is about the same as in the video here:

The only definite thing I can think of that we would need is frisbees, and maybe 4 of the andymark 9015 motors with fisher price pinion gears. Also I would be onboard with getting the pneumatic wheels for traction

Re: Parts that are needed now
math on the frisbee is coming in a moment
numbers im coming up with for the shooter shown in the video aren't making much sense
They geared up the cims and used 8" wheels and should 78m/s, likely because the fisbee is slipping
Dead tired for now, Ill have something tomorrow morning

Re: Parts that are needed now
I could help build a frisbee shooter proto, I'll try to CAD something up but inventor doesn't want to install properly.

Make sure you select download from the drop down menu to get a fairly large exe file
The auto desk downloader app doesn't work too well

Be more specific with part numbers.
Andymark
I think you mean this and it is out of stock
Sun Gear, 15 Tooth, 32 dp (am-0040)
We may use this
15 tooth, 0.125 bore gear with hub and set screw (am-0896)

Ken do you have wood/metal, wheels, and angle iron at home already?

I have some wood, screws, tools, and a flux core welder. Can you post sketches for the prototypes here?

These are the wheels we were looking at: http://www.andymark.com/product-p/am-0970.htm
It seems it's actually 7.65" in diameter though so the drawing needs to be changed slightly.

Re: Parts that are needed now
The frame for the prototype can definitely be cut out of wood, bearings, hubs, and miscellaneous drive train components will be necessary to throw together a prototype. There might be some 8" non-pneumatic wheels in the sheds. I would also like to see how a belted shooter works compared to the wheels. I would guess pneumatic wheels were used in the "3 day robot"'s shooter so they would deform and not warp the frisbees and a belt with adjustable tension could accomplish the same goal for less weight if it works.
Also, what was the deign intent behind the shooter with 2 wheels on opposite sides of the frisbee?

Oh the first image is actually Matt's frisbee pickup drawing.

regarding Kens question
The first wheels feeds the frisbee into the second, the second gives the spin, what about using a shooter the has a wheel on either side and flings the with a flicking motion, if both wheels turn at same speed left rotates counter clockwise and right clockwise. I believe that is what the lego bot I posted awhile ago does. i believe that it would fling it move staright with more force and less left or right drag.
another idea being a sling shot as well. Using tubbing

Re: Parts that are needed now
having 2 wheels spinning opposite directions will give the frisbee angular velocity but no linear velocity, it would basically spin in one spot. That could be combined with an air ram for even a kicker to propel the fisbee away from the wheels spinning opposite directions

Re: Parts that are needed now
one of the wheels would need to spin faster than the other, which is what was happening in the lego disc shooter mr mackinnon is referring to
the difference in speed gives the frisbee the spin it needs to fly straight, but that was only in small scale, im not totally convinced it would work as well on a full-sized frc robot

Parts needed now
This thread is only for parts, can all posts be removed that are not totally parts oriented.
I expect a launcher to be finished by Sunday.

1/2" bearings, shafts, hubs, wheels, and chain. I have a 1-1/8 hole saw that can be used to make wood bearing blocks that will be good enough for testing
